Jane let’s start things off with you telling us a little about yourself.
JS: Well, I’m a stay-at-home Mum of 2 adorable kids but, I am super busy as I’m also a social media influencer, so I attend events often. I also get booked for photoshoots occasionally. I love being on the go with a packed-out schedule, but I’ve gotten burnt out several times so now I’m trying to learn how to pace myself and slow down as well.
How did you find the love for fitness and modeling, and have you always been an extroverted person or were you shyer when you were younger?
JS: Shocking to some but, I was extremely shy during my younger days. I did child modeling, but it was always met with so much criticism and as a child, your little hearts are too fragile for that sort of thing. I was always a friendly person though, that bit never changed about me. Over the years in “conservative Singapore”, I was told many times that my tattoos were a problem, and I wasn’t slim enough to be a model. So, when I hit 30, I just started freelancing and doing my own thing. It worked out for the better.
When it comes to working with a photographer, what traits do you look for?
JS: Firstly, just someone who doesn’t have a hidden agenda and has a passion for the craft. I’ve worked with many, and I love how they all have their own creative take on things, it teaches me a lot as well. I really enjoy photography and would love to dabble into it professionally myself one day. I know it’s crazy but most of my own pictures on Instagram are taken by me! I use a timer and I just know the angle and feel which I’m going for. I love editing as well. It’s all a skill really.
Being part of an industry, whose only emphasis is on the outside characteristics of a person, how have you stayed grounded?
JS: This is something I pride myself a lot of in. I often get comments on being friendly and down to earth which puzzles me at times? To me, I’m just a normal person (who’s a little colorful I guess) with a job where I’ve to put a lot of myself out there online. For me, I always remember my roots. I was the ugly duckling growing up and the memories have stuck with me till today. I’m just an ordinary person who has tattoos and red hair and likes to take pictures, I’m seriously goofy when you get to know me.
What do you like to do in your downtime?
JS: Rest. But I’m still learning how to. The workaholic in me just doesn’t know how.
For the general fitness enthusiast, female or male, do you think basing the majority of their training routine on the principles of Powerlifting and/or strength training would be beneficial?
JS: I would say strength training is sufficient and the way to go. I’ve been into lifting weights since I was a teenager, and it helps you overall in your daily life activities. In fact, handling and lifting my kids all over the place has added to my strength training routine.
What, in your opinion, are the biggest misconceptions regarding strength training today?
JS: That women will get big and look like men? That’s not going to happen unless you’re taking in some foreign substances and lifting like a beast daily.
How long did it take you to get to where you are now?
JS: I’m not exactly at my goal both health wise and aesthetic wise. But I’ve learnt to chill a little. After you become a mum, you learn to go easy on yourself.
What has been your greatest adventure to this date? What about that made it stand out and the experience so memorable?
JS: I don’t really travel much or head out on adventures, but I’ve had a few memorable moments in life where my level of endurance and resilience has been tested. Thank goodness for social media as it’s is where I get to live out some of my friend’s adventures vicariously through their posts! Other than that, I’m still waiting for my own beautiful adventure to come.
Some of us, being human, tend to get into a funk and lose motivation. What has kept you motivated at your craft? What lessons from you can we learn to get ourselves back on track?
JS: It’s the whole “eye on the prize” saying. I have so many moments where I’m so unmotivated and I feel awful. But when that voice comes out, it’s where your discipline and control need to kick in. Just show up and do it.
Let’s be honest! Everyone hates cardio. Is there a more effective way to perform cardio than the same ol method of running on a treadmill?
JS: Chasing after the kids! But seriously, I love walking and going on long strolls. If you’re not in a hurry to get somewhere, instead of taking the bus, just walk.
When you’re not working on your craft, how do you chill out and unwind?
JS: I love spending time with my kids and reliving that second childhood of mine. I love winding down with watching comedy because I love a good laugh. I use so much brain power with my work so turning on a silly movie helps me de-stress. Other than that, catching up with friends over tea or drinks is healthy for me too occasionally.
What are some general words of wisdom you live by?
JS: Live and let live. Life is already so tough in itself; we’re all trying to get by daily. So just focus on your own life and if other people aren’t disturbing yours then leave them be. Just, chill.
