Britt please tell us a little about yourself.
B: I am a 30 year old personal trainer and mindset coach living in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. I have been a trainer for 5 years and was a dancer for 10 years before that. I love music, specifically I am an R&B head, movies, reading, comics and anime, and last but certainly not least, travelling. I’m a geek at heart and you will find homages all around my home to many of the things geeky things I love including my set of wands from Ollivanders at Harry Potter World in Orlando.
How did you get into fitness and what drives your motivations?
B: After sustaining a hamstring injury that took me out of dance and into active rehab, I found my love of fitness going through my rehabilitation. I am driven by my passion to help people reach their goals. I know what its like to feel like your body is holding you back from doing the things you love or how it feels to be lost and not knowing where to start when it comes to getting healthy. I am motivated to share my knowledge to help others become the version of themselves they want most, inside and out.
How do you start your day and what do you do to stay active weekly?
B: I start my day by making my bed. I then turn my music on and dance around my kitchen while I make breakfast, drink my greens and get myself fuelled for the day.
To stay active I get my walks in every morning on my commute to work and I schedule time in during the week to hit the gym. My usual workout schedule is 5 days a week in the evenings. I also like to take recreational dance classes when I can fit them in.

If Covid was not an issue, where would you travel to today and why?
B: I would be based in London travelling around Europe. I love London and there is so much of Europe I have yet to see. Outside that I also had a Japan and Malaysia trip planned for this year that has been postponed so i would definitely be planning that. I am a big anime buff and have always wanted to go to Japan to really soak in the culture and see the amazing things they have built there.
With Covid closing gyms and making people spend more time at home, how do you keep your motivations up and keep moving forward? What tips do you have to others looking to gain momentum living a healthy lifestyle?
B: When we first went into lockdown it was hard to find my groove. Being stuck inside, it can be really easy to procrastinate not being active. What I did was work on changing my mindset and instead of thinking “Ugh I have no weights at home” I thought “What can I use instead?” I deadlifted my two seater couch at one point. Haha. I was determined.
If I can give anyone a tip on how to gain momentum it would be this: Find a way to remind yourself everyday WHY you’re doing what you’re doing. Put a reminder alarm in your phone. Put a motivation board on your wall where you can see it everyday. Speak affirmations in the mornings or whenever you need them. If you don’t have a strong why, you wont fight for it. So, find your why and remind yourself everyday.
Who is your role model?
B: I am inspired by a lot of people to be honest. I wouldn’t say I have a singular role model. Some of the people I draw inspiration and motivation from are: The Rock, Trent Shelton, Karina Irby, & Brene Brown.
For people who say working out is boring or hard, what do you tell them?
B: If you find your workout boring, get creative. There are a million ways to spice up your workout. If you want it to be fun, define for yourself what a fun workout would consist of and start implementing it. Maybe the best workout for you isn’t at the gym, maybe its at a yoga studio, maybe its on the track, maybe its in a kickboxing studio.
If you find your workout hard, all I can say is, it should be. Don’t get me wrong, your workout shouldn’t cause you mental stress or physical pain, but it SHOULD challenge you. In order for anything to be easy, it has to first be hard, don’t you think? Easy may be nicer, but real results come from hard work.
On a scale of 1 to 10 – How important is food to your lifestyle? Why?
B: 10. Food is fuel. Food is your baseline. If you’re not getting the nutrients you need, your body is going to fail you. Your mind is going to fail you. Your brain and everything connected to it, requires food to run. So its key to any goal you have for yourself and your health.
You seem really confident in your body – what advice do you have for women (or men) who want that for themselves?
B: Confidence comes from loving yourself. Even when others don’t.
If I can give anyone a piece of advice about confidence it’s this: If you can’t love yourself at EVERY moment, embrace yourself at EVERY moment, in every size or shape you may take through your life, you will always just be chasing confidence. You will always feel one step behind everyone, because you are in fact PUTTING yourself one step behind everyone. You in this very moment, reading this sentence are in fact ENOUGH, you are worthy of love, belonging, and success. So, love yourself. Tell yourself you are incredible both inside and out. Tell yourself everyday if you must. Confidence is an ongoing practice, it is not something you just have or don’t have. So be kind to yourself during your vulnerable moments, STRUT your stuff during your high moments, and just do the best you can in between. That’s all we can ask of ourselves.

When you think about success, who is the first person that comes to mind?
B: I don’t think of anyone when i think of success. I think of myself. I think of the things that I want and aim for that make up success to me.
2020 has brought us many ups and downs. What has it taught you that you will be bringing with you into 2021?
B: What 2020 has taught me is not everyone who rides with you, rides for you. It’s important to surround yourself with people who bring out the best in you for YOU, not those who try to siphon the best from you for THEM. Put your needs first and know that it is OK to say NO. I believe knowing when to say no is vastly more important than knowing when to say Yes.
Who or what inspires you? why?
B: I mentioned previously who my inspirations were but why? Because they all stand firmly in their truth and share who they are. At their best and worst moments they are honest and open and never fail to spread a little sparkle wherever they go.
General words of wisdom you live by?
B: The challenges ahead will change you, in that there is no doubt. But, it’s your choice to grow bitter from them or grow better.
