Gail is a veteran industry specialist who knows the beer industry inside and out. We’re thrilled to hear her take on the industry. Let’s dive in!

Gail, could you introduce yourself and briefly describe your Instagram account — what’s your focus and the reason you started it? Do you see this as a business, a hobby, or something in between?

G: Hi, I’m Gail, the creator of That_First_Sip. I invite you to follow along with my journey, as we can experience the craft beer industry together.

That_First_Sip started as a hobby and It quickly evolved into my passion for craft beer and fashion. My blogging has lead me to enjoy all things associated with the craft beer genre. Brewery hostings, beer festivals, beer events, community support and one of a kind beer swag.

Let’s talk beer. The beer craft industry seems to be growing exponentially with so many great expressions being released all the time. What are your favorite characteristics or profiles when it comes to beer specifically? What about the beverage draws you in?

G: Yes let’s talk about beer! The craft beer industry is fire! There are so many great beers being produced right now. It’s exciting to see so many new and existing brewers infusing their own ingredients and changing the craft beer game. I mean triple hops and galaxy hops are hoppier then ever with aromas you wouldn’t even think of for an IPA. New types of Sours and Goose are evolving by pushing the limits on the fermentation process. Brewers are adding ingredients to stouts and porters, like marshmallows and cookies, it’s outrageously brilliant! The double haze IPAs that are coming out right now are more aggressive than ever! Personally, I love a thick Stout you can chew, a smooth bodied citrus IPA with some kick and a beautiful pour of a Sour to enjoy the evening with. I also love that breweries are incorporating a more family, community, pet-friendly experience to their establishments.

What is your definition of an “influencer”?

G: Having the ability to engage with individuals in whatever niche that may be. Such as fitness, fashion, craft beer, etc. I believe if you can provide relatable content to that particular enthusiast you can capture a more personal experience.

From your perspective what draws the followers to your photos?

G: I bring a experience to my audience that they can enjoy visually. I take them along a craft beer journey, whether It’s me sharing that first sip of craft beer, traveling, visiting breweries or doing beer events. I want my viewers to feel as they are right there in that moment sharing the same connection. I also stay current with fashion trends in apparel. This is no longer just a tee shirt and blue jeans market for women in craft beer. It’s been fun to add my personal fashion style alongside beer enthusiasts.

How has your Instagram feed evolved over time? Any specific turning points?

G: I have gained more knowledge about craft beer. Like the different brewing process’ for example. So much heart and soul goes into each individual style of beer from start to finish. So many methods are being used through trial and error. Then having to create a visual experience for your customer with a can design and name for the beer brewed, it’s truly some work I can appreciate!

In addition, I’m also able to utilize new apps and programs to effectively create a clean gallery. Those types of apps weren’t available a few years back. So to be able to have a platform and utilize the knowledge I learned about beer, combined with the new current app functions, I’m able to share a cleaner presentation through photos.

What is your stance on influencers being paid to post about brands? Should influencers be transparent regarding payment for posts?

G: I believe it’s a positive experience to be rewarded for producing creative content. We work hard for what we do, it takes time to gather information and plan it all out. I pick and choose what reputable brands I work with. I try to choose products or services that my followers may have an interest in or can utilize.

When it comes to influencers being transparent regarding payment, I think it’s a personal preference. For me, it doesn’t deter me from following some of my favorite influencers. It can be a lot of work, so more power to them.

What would you most like to add to your knowledge about social media marketing and strategy?

G: Be unique, Be yourself while still maintaining the integrity of who you are and what you stand for. Keeping myself grounded is my marketing strategy Instagram is constantly evolving, it could be easy to lose focus of your goals and get lost in cliches or fads of other creators. I stick to creating consistent quality content either by posting daily photos, making videos and/or stories. I feel this really helps me connect with my audience. I like to get involved with my community and communities that I travel too as well. They can be so supportive and welcoming!

What is your favorite travel destination and why?

G: -I love to travel and really who doesn’t? I have memorable moments from each place that I have visited and it’s nearly impossible to narrow it down. I do enjoy the Pacific Northwest, particularly, Oregon. It offers so many of the hobbies that I enjoy, such as Oregon’s craft beer scene which is a crafty delight! It is an outdoor dream to be able to fish in the ocean, hike beautiful trails, escape to gorgeous wineries and stay at beautiful resorts. I can enjoy a day on the coast or inland with trees that are so tall, they almost touch the clouds and all just in one state!

@roadtobrews It’s my behind the scenes travel experience that I have collected throughout the years. The focus is on my visual experience of breathtaking views across the states. Phenomenal cuisine, magazine food worthy and more in-depth experience with breweries and their owners!

I’m sure running @that_first_sip gets overwhelming sometimes; how do you manage that? Do you plan out content calendars/posts ahead of time or just go with the flow (or some combination of that)?
