Lately I have been more into experiencing all that bourbon or whiskey with an E has to offer. I began my love for the water of life as Scotch, as my girlfriend whom I love to pieces, introduced me to as my first brown gold sip. I have nothing against Scotch, there is so much complexity and richness that is just undeniable. However, over the course of this journey, my love for Whiskey with an E, or American Whiskey has changed dramatically. Dare I say I even, now, look forward to it.
I love finished whiskey. Whether it be port or sherry or any other finish, I say bring it on. More flavor profiles, more richness, more of everything.
Virginia Distillery Co malt whisky comes from the Scottish Highlands and is finished in port-style wine casks sourced from local Virginia wineries.
Name: Virginia Highland Malt Whisky – Port Finished
ABV: 46% or 92 Proof
Nose: First there is a smell of brown sugar, nutmeg and hints of oak. The oak is faint and is really overshadowed by the spicy nutmeg.
Palate: Dark Chocolate, butter and leathery tobacco. Chalky candy, almost powdery oak(if there is such a thing). The Port is very much reminiscent of the sherry cask finishes. You can also taste some light fruit towards the back of the palate. If you swirl it around your tongue before swallowing, you may also notice hints of toffee.
Finish: Medium to Long, there is no spicy burn on the backend, but you can feel something tingling. If you let it sit out for about 10-15 minutes, the spiciness subsides and more mellow oak notes and coco are tasted.
